Each year the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Wisconsin invites engineering firms to submit their best projects to compete in the Engineering Excellence Awards program. Donohue & Associates submitted two projects this year and both received Best of State Awards:

  • Eau Claire WWTF: Resilient. Robust. Sustainable. The City of Eau Claire wanted to improve its wastewater treatment plant, but was faced with some unique challenges. Donohue set out from the beginning with the goal to create a facility that was resilient, robust, and sustainable. The upgrade includes a biological nutrient removal (BNR) activated sludge system; preliminary treatment and solids handling complex odor control; sludge handling and digestion improvements; new controls system; and building code compliance. The new facility has achieved and surpassed those ambitious goals. Learn more about the Eau Claire Project.
  • Kenosha WWTP: Energy Optimized Resource Recovery. Kenosha set a progressive goal of a more sustainable wastewater treatment plant. Anaerobic digestion, medium-temperature thermal biosolids drying, combined heat and power (CHP) energy recovery, and North America’s first PONDUS thermal-chemical hydrolysis system recover energy and nutrients. This project reduced treatment plant energy and solids handling costs and dependence on fossil fuel energy, removed 10,000 tons annually from landfills, and produces a Class A biosolids product that allows for the annual reuse of 500 tons of nitrogen and 250 tons of phosphorus. Learn more about the Kenosha Project.

Best of State Awards are presented to entries representing the highest degree of technical innovation, client satisfaction, and contributions to the engineering industry.

The next stage of the Engineering Excellence process takes place on March 24, 2017 at the Awards Banquet when one Grand Award is selected from the six winners of Best of State. We look forward to the Awards Banquet and wish the best of luck to all firms competing.
